The beautiful spa town of Luhačovice is situated in south-east Moravia, 250 metres above sea level. It is surrounded by dense forests of the White Carpathian mountains. Luhačovice is the center of an area called "Luhačovské Zálesí" (Luhačovice backwoods). The local climate is warm with relatively few clouds and rich sunshine.
Besides the natural beauties there is the famous spa resort of Luhačovice, the 4th largest spa in the Czech Republic and the largest one in Moravia. People with respiratory diseases, digestive diseases, diabetes, obesity or musculoskeletal system diseases are treated here. You can try both classical healing treatments and a stay in the Luhačovice Spa focused on total relaxation and gaining new energy.
There are 6 healing waters spontaneously springing from the ground and many other springs are artificially bored to help treat different kinds of diseases. The most famous one is undoubtedly Vincentka, famous for its salty taste and minerals. Vincentka is available in almost every pharmacy. The local springs are considered to be one of the most effective in the whole of Europe, thanks to their high mineral content.
Archaeological findings speak about Slavic settlement in the surroundings of Luhačovice in 7th - 8th century. We can find the first written record approximately 7 centuries later - in the year 1412.
The first information about the Luhačovice mineral waters existance came from physicist and physician Jan Ferdinand Hertoda, year 1669. News about the healing power of Luhačovice waters spread into the neighbourhood and in the following years the first guests started to come. The treatment baths began in 1790.
Although Luhačovice is not a large town it has a rich history. We can mention the situation after the Battle of the White Mountain when Luhačovice were confiscated by Maximilian of Liechtenstein. The property wasn't his for a long time, only until the year 1629 when he sold it to Gabriel Serényi. The Serényi family were very important in Luhačovice history because they were the first to realise the importance of the healing springs and decided to use it for business. They held the town until the year 1945. This noble family had to modify and use the springs Amandka and Vincentka. Increasing interest in the healing springs gradually gave impetus to the further development of Luhačovice and its surrounding. Firstly inns appeared then first hotels and then further infrastructure to be able to deal with the numerous groups of vacationers and spa guests.
At the beginning of 20th century MUDr. František Veselý became the director of the newly created joint-stock company. He wanted to develop a spa in Luhačovice. The work of a well-known architect Dušan Jurkovič gave the city a memorable form that we can see today. The healing waters of Luhačovice were & are still considered to be one of the most effective in the whole Europe. People with respiratory tract diseases, digestive tract diseases, diabetes, obesity, musculoskeletal disorders, circulatory system diseases or cancer disease are treated here.
Luhačovice together with its surroundings offer many options for sport activities - hiking trails or biking trails in the White Carpathians mountains. Sports facilities offered are tennis, squash, minigolf, bowling, sauna, relaxation and fitness centers etc. You can visit the modern and well-equipped sport area Radostova, suitable for both amateur and professional sportsmen (hall for ball games, spinning, an outside playground with 3rd generation artificial turf, tennis courts and additional cinder, asphalt or grass playing fields).
If you like to swim you can try the indoor swimming pools in local hotels or the town swimming pool. There was a valley dam built not far from Pozlovice in 1930, nowadays visited resort. Besides lounging by the water or horseback riding, playing minigolf, tennis and many more sports. You can also spend your leisure time by fishing or try the aquapark in summer.

František Veselý was born in 1862, in Bystřice nad Pernštejnem - north of Brno. His studies took him first to Brno grammar school and then to medicine studies at Charles University in Prague. After a couple of years in military service as a doctor he settled not far from Brno where he started to build wells and a mineral water bottling facility.
It's not so far from Brno to Luhačovice and František Veselý was impressed by Luhačovice during his first visit. He saw the potential of the local healing springs, admired the untouched nature and decided to build a city spa center here. Although his enthusiasm wasn't met with as good response from others as he expected, his hard work and enthusiasm became the base of current modern spa.
Dušan Jurkovič was born in 1868 in Slovakia. He was a well-known architect, furniture designer and ethnographer. His work can be set in an Art Nouveau architecture category. He studied in Vienna and his work was affected by folk architecture. After the WW1 he designed his first mounted houses that were supposed to solve the Slovakian building troubles.
He produced a significant part of his work in Bohemia and Moravia, a part his projects were focused on architecture and spa houses in Luhačovice. His distinctive style can be seen in the town until now - according to his design e.g. "Sun spa", "Music pavilion" and a couple of villas were built, and many other buildings. We have to mention the so-called "Jurkovič house", the building rebuilt by Jurkovič at the beginning of 20th century - it dominates the town. This great man was honoured by the title "national artist" in Slovakia.
Those who are interested in Luhačovice or in classical music probably know that a well-known music festival takes place in Luhačovice every year. This event is named "Janáček and Luhačovice" after the well-known composer Leoš Janáček. He was born in 1854 in Moravian Hukvaldy. He was a regular guest in local spa resort. He visited Luhačovice 25 times. This place wasn't just an area to gain new energy or to improve his health. He drew inspiration here to compose significant artwork (e.g. The Cunning Little Vixen and Glagolitic Mass).
The melodies based on folk music of Moravian regions is the most appreciated part of Janáček's music. For those who want to get more information about his stays in Luhačovice we recommend a guided tour to places where this artist used to stay.
